In design terms, there are several different ideas at work in the Airstream Concept. The principal and most exciting of these is the ‘HySeries Drive’, a rechargeable electric engine that runs on hydrogen fuel cells, on show here for the first time.

Next to this cutting-edge technology, however, we have two further design influence that are almost vintage enough to be considered kitsch. The first is Airstream, the famous and ancient American trailer brand with which Ford collaborated on the project. And the second, strangely enough, is Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey.

What follows is an attempt to understand these three rather different ideas.

The HySeries Drive
Hydrogen is one of several ‘fuels of the future’ currently being bandied-about by automotive engineers and car firms, but it has been held back so far for want of a suitably efficient delivery method.

It can currently be used in car engines (BMW have already produced a petrol/hydrogen hybrid vehicle, and many gas stations in Germany actually pump hydrogen), but the cost of doing so in terms of ‘miles-per-unit’ at the pumps means only the rich and eco-friendly actually buy any. And having said that, ‘eco-friendly’ is not a term which can be straightforwardly applied to hydrogen fuel.

While it’s true that burning hydrogen is very clean, producing practically zero damaging emissions out of your exhaust pipe, the process of bottling the stuff requires a great deal of electrical energy. And unfortunately for the environment, that energy is usually provided by a fossil fuel-burning power station. In this respect, hydrogen-fuelled cars are often just as damaging as regular petrol ones – it’s just that that damage is done elsewhere.

One answer to the problems with hydrogen would be to come up with a new storage medium and drivetrain, that between them are efficient enough to undercut regular old unleaded in terms of fuel economy. And with the HySeries Drive, Ford reckons it’s done just that.

The drivetrain is powered by an electrical engine, similar to that used in conventional hybrid vehicles like the Honda Prius; but in this case electricity provides 100 percent of power to the wheels (the Prius, by comparison, switches back and forth from electric to petrol). And while it spends energy making the wheels go round, the battery behind that electrical engine is being re-charged by the aforementioned hydrogen fuel cell.

It might not sound like much, but using the hydrogen in this way means that the HySeries Drive can be 50 percent smaller and less complex than a conventional fuel cell system, and could potentially have more than double the lifetime. Even better, mounting it in the Airstream Concept (which is no supermini in terms of size and weight) produces the cost-equivalent of 41mpg.

Airstream trailers and 2001: A Space Odyssey
Stylistically, the car is an amalgamation of these two iconic looks. Its bulbous outer body shape and polished chrome paintjob are clearly a nod to the beautiful Airstream trailers of the 1950′s, as are 12 ‘ceremonial’ rivets placed at various points around the car. Then the designers have turned to Kubrick’s 1968 space-fest for the shape of its asymmetrical windows, distinctive red-and-white upholstery and self-consciously 60′s interior.

It all looks good in a retro kind of way, but what does this odd choice of muses actually say about the Airstream Concept – and the idea of the ‘American Journey” at that?

The trailer is something of a mixed metaphor. On the one hand, it conjures up ideas of the restless wanderer, a person without roots or fixed abode – much like the first American settlers’ westward journey to explore and colonise new parts of their undiscovered country. But at the same time, trailers have a different and more negative connotation. ‘Trailer trash’ is a symbol for ignorance and poverty in the states, and of people going nowhere rather than free-wheeling. Thus it can also be a pretty bleak image for the American Journey.

2001 provides similar puzzles. Scratch the surface and you’ll know it’s about new technological discoveries and an exciting era of space travel – exactly the kind of thing Ford is looking for. But beyond that, 2001 has some pretty scary predictions for the continuing American Journey. Think about it: Is HAL 9000 really a good role model for the cars of the future?

In its defence, however, the Ford Airstream Concept is primarily about showing-off the HySeries Drive. It’s not a production model (we’re not about to go out and get a car insurance quote for one), and reading too much into the trim is probably missing the point.

In any respect, the car looks promisingly futuristic in the drivetrain stakes, and the wait now is for the first HySeries models to hit Ford dealerships across the world.

Magnesium wheels may be lighter than aluminum alloys but are easily flammable and are banned in some arenas of motor sports in the United Kingdom due to occurrences of fires. These fires are very difficult to extinguish and are really hazardous as they can become fatal for the driver. The fire initiates as and when the tire gets punctured and the wheel scrapes the rough road surface for a prolonged period. There are some variants of Magnesium alloy wheels available which may have low corrosion resistance.

These hazardous features of Mag Wheels along with being expensive make them impractical for usage in most common vehicles. Aluminum wheels are often popularly referred to as “mag wheels” and are preferred over the mag and chrome wheels.

Many wheel brands which include Panther Wheel, American Racing Wheels, Motegi Racing Performance Wheels, Weld Racing, BBS, 5Zigen, Volk Racing and Konig are known manufacturers of quality alloys. The aftermarket wheels have also been inundated with the vast incursion of reasonably priced chrome wheels from East Asia.

With India, investing in alloy wheels through Synergies Castings Ltd. and other companies – of late has also emerged as a leading supplier of chrome wheels. They are able to manufacture products to a universal scale due to the availability of cheap but highly trained and experienced labor. One of the oldest aftermarket wheel companies dating back to 1956 is the American Racing, which owns Motegi Racing and Weld Racing among other famous brands.

A recent trend in the manufacturing industries includes joint venture partnerships being shaped between offshore firms, local importers and distributors. At the prestigious auto show, GM will showcase two trucks and a crossover sport utility. However, the most captivating model, as anticipated, will be the Denali XT concept, a hybrid pickup truck. The low-slung muscular car-based concept which boasts of its green credentials will be displayed at the show this Wednesday.

GM’s GMC brand has been tailored with a sophisticated expert pedigree. But in flaunting the Denali XT concept, the Detroit automaker intends to prove that GMC truck parts are evolving with time. The venerable truck brand wants to prove that improvement never sleeps.

Warrack Leach, the Denali XT’s lead designer, described it as a pickup for guys that pine for “a truck with badness but don’t necessarily need a truck everyday.” In other words, there are more things that the truck intends to offer. Fuel efficiency, improved power, better handling, superb ergonomics, and enhanced truck capabilities are just few of the features of the pickup truck concept.

The Denali XT’s new 4.9-liter version of the automaker’s V8 features fuel injection and active fuel management, which when mated with the two-mode hybrid system and E85 ethanol capability, delivers a 50 percent raise in fuel economy over similar small pickup trucks. Another milestone about the truck concept is the coupling of the automaker’s two-mode hybrid system with an E85 ethanol-capable engine. The concept’s new small-block V-8 features fuel-injection and active fuel management.

The truck is derived from the automaker’s Zeta rear-wheel drive architecture that serves as the underbelly for the new Pontiac G8 sedan and the upcoming Chevy Camaro. It was designed and constructed by GM’s Holden unit in Australia, where the notion of a modern truck that blends fuel efficiency, sports car handling and function, picture a weekend camping and racing across the dunes of the Outback – is more commonly embraced, reported The Detroit News.

Shoppers shift to small and fuel-efficient cars continues. As such, automakers are worried about the sales of their gas-sipping huge vehicles. GM was also worried. This is why the largest American automaker decided to tweak its truck DNA a bit rather than lose a significant slice of the market.

Ford has got to be one of the most sought after car makes in the UK with thousands on young drivers eager to spend their much hard earned money of their very own Fiesta, Focus or Ka. Myles J. Romeo, manager of the Ford Global Brand Entertainment Group, said, “Ford Motor Company has been providing stars with cars for as long as the film industry has exists. Whether it’s Keystone Kops driving Model T’s or CIA agent Sydney Bristow in a Ford Escape Hybrid on ‘Alias’, Ford vehicles have been a part of the entertainment world for nearly a century.”

He added, “It’s very important for directors and screenwriters to have the precise vehicle for a film. With the wide range of vehicles in the Ford corporate family, it’s easy to match the exact vehicle to a film’s specific needs.”

Just to demonstrate Ford’s success, in a recent survey to find the best all-time car starring in a movie, Ford walked away with the number two spot with its Mustangs appearance in the 1968 movie Bullitt. In this film, Steve McQueen drives through the streets of San Francisco in what has become known as one of the greatest chase scenes that has ever been made.

But Ford hasn’t only made appearances in movies. Nope, its models have also featured in some of today’s top television programmes, delivering the name Ford to millions of viewers who may one day take out XX1XX car insurance themselves. Some of the programmes we’re talking about include the popular teen drama The O.C, the hit comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm and even one of the best series to take to the TV screens, Desperate Housewives.

XX1XX is definitely a recognisable name in the industry that many people feel happy to use in their movies.

Josh Hancock has been an automotive consultant in the film industry for 15 years and says, “Cars tell you something about the character and add another dimension to them. If it’s not done right, it throws everything off. With a portfolio as broad as XX1XX’s you can have a Range Rover and a Jaguar and a Mustang all in the same film, and it doesn’t look unnatural or as if you’re pushing something.”

So, there you have it. Magnesium alloy wheels are also referred to as mag wheels , are sometimes used on racing cars, instead of the heavy steel or aluminum wheels as they give better weight reduction and acceleration. The wheels are formed in only one-step by hot forging from the magnesium alloys ZK60 and MA-14. The Russian variation of the ZK60 is used in this process. Magnesium wheels may be lighter than aluminum alloys but are easily flammable and are banned in some arenas of motor sports in the United Kingdom due to occurrences of fires. These fires are very difficult to extinguish and are really hazardous as they can become fatal for the driver. The fire initiates as and when the tire gets punctured and the wheel scrapes the rough road surface for a prolonged period. There are some variants of Magnesium alloy wheels available which may have low corrosion resistance.

These hazardous features of Mag Wheels along with being expensive make them impractical for usage in most common vehicles. Aluminum wheels are often popularly referred to as “mag wheels” and are preferred over the mag and chrome wheels.

Many wheel brands which include Panther Wheel, American Racing Wheels, Motegi Racing Performance Wheels, Weld Racing, BBS, 5Zigen, Volk Racing and Konig are known manufacturers of quality alloys. The aftermarket wheels have also been inundated with the vast incursion of reasonably priced chrome wheels from East Asia.

They are able to manufacture products to a universal scale due to the availability of cheap but highly trained and experienced labor. One of the oldest aftermarket wheel companies dating back to 1956 is the American Racing, which owns Motegi Racing and Weld Racing among other famous brands.

A recent trend in the manufacturing industries includes joint venture partnerships being shaped between offshore firms, local importers and distributors. These partnerships have initiated a stern competition between the giants of manufacturing and thus leading them to do an extensive R&D. This has left the market flooded with a vast collection of superior alloys to choose from, thus benefiting the car users.
